Most people picture Holland when they think of tulips and cruising. The image is accurate as far as it goes: flat fields stretching to the horizon, windmills in the distance, the Keukenhof Gardens in full color. However, tulip season by water is not a single experience. The version that fits you depends entirely on what kind of trip you are looking for.
Here are three itineraries I work with for spring 2027. Each one is built around the same season and a completely different travel style.

Option One: The Classic European River Experience
Viking River Cruises — Tulips and Windmills or Holland and Belgium
10 days | Amsterdam to Amsterdam or Amsterdam to Antwerp
Viking's tulip season voyages cover the Netherlands and Belgium in a format that handles everything: the fields, the canals of Amsterdam, the medieval streets of Bruges, the cheese markets, and the windmills at Kinderdijk. In short, it does a lot in ten days, which is the point.
Two Routes for Spring
Viking offers two routes for spring 2027. First, Tulips and Windmills is a round-trip from Amsterdam, keeping you in the Netherlands and Belgium and returning where you started. Second, Holland and Belgium sails one-way from Amsterdam to Antwerp, covering the same core territory with a different structure. Importantly, both itineraries include a shore excursion to Keukenhof Gardens paired with historic Haarlem, nicknamed Flower City for its ties to the tulip bulb industry.
The Keukenhof Excursion
The gardens cover 70 acres with more than 100 tulip varieties in bloom at once. Visits are structured as free-roam time after a short orientation. As a result, you get time to wander rather than follow a tour group on a schedule. That format is the right call for this particular destination.
What Else Is Included
Beyond the tulips, Viking's itineraries include Kinderdijk's windmills, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and an optional visit to Bruges, one of the best-preserved medieval city centers in Europe. Additionally, all meals, port charges, and one excursion per port are included in the fare.
Who this fits: Couples and empty nesters who want the full European river cruise experience, prefer an itinerary that handles the logistics, and have been thinking about tulip season long enough that they want to do it properly.
Option Two: The Small Ship Ocean Experience
Windstar Cruises — 7-Day Tulip Season in Holland and Belgium
7 days | Amsterdam to Amsterdam | Spring 2027
Windstar brings a different sensibility to the same geography. Viking operates purpose-built river longships designed for canal navigation. Windstar's Star Legend is a small ocean yacht carrying 212 passengers that calls on ports river ships cannot reach. The smaller passenger count changes the pace of the whole experience.
What Makes Windstar Different
The Windstar itinerary covers the same tulip-season territory: Amsterdam, the Dutch countryside, Belgium. The ship experience is what sets it apart. An all-suite fleet, an open bridge policy where guests can visit the navigation deck, and a crew-to-passenger ratio that creates something more personal than a larger river operation.
Timing and the Bloom Window
Windstar builds its spring schedule around the Keukenhof bloom window, which typically peaks in mid to late April. The itinerary includes a gardens visit. What differs from Viking is the ship, the passenger mix, and the onboard rhythm.
For travelers who have done a European river cruise before and want a different format, Windstar is the right comparison.
Who this fits: Repeat river cruise travelers looking for a different format, couples who prioritize onboard intimacy and a smaller passenger count, and anyone drawn to a small ocean yacht over a river longship.

Option Three: The American Alternative
American Cruise Lines — Puget Sound and San Juan Islands
9 days | Seattle/Tacoma to Tacoma | March and April 2027
This one surprises people, but it belongs in this conversation.
The Skagit Valley in Spring
The Skagit Valley in Washington State is one of North America's premier tulip destinations. The annual Skagit Valley Tulip Festival runs through April. Fields around La Conner and Anacortes produce a scale of color that rivals Holland, set against the Cascade Mountains and the waters of the Salish Sea. Most people experience the Skagit Valley as a day trip from Seattle. American Cruise Lines builds it into a nine-day Pacific Northwest voyage.
Day 3 of the itinerary calls on Anacortes, the gateway to the San Juan Islands, where a complimentary excursion visits La Conner, a charming town with galleries, boutiques, and walking paths along the Swinomish Channel. On spring departures in late March and April, that visit sits directly in the festival window.
The Rest of the Itinerary
The voyage also includes Friday Harbor in the San Juan Islands, Victoria BC with access to Butchart Gardens, Port Townsend, Bremerton, and cruising days through the Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands. Whales, eagles, and seals are regularly spotted from ship balconies.
A Second Garden Destination
Butchart Gardens in Victoria deserves its own mention. A former limestone quarry transformed into a National Historic Site of Canada, the gardens feature plants in over 900 varieties. It is a different experience than a tulip field. On a spring sailing, it adds a second garden destination to an already visually rich itinerary.
This is also an all-American itinerary on an American-flagged ship, with no international flights required. For empty nesters on the West Coast, it is often the most accessible entry point into small-ship cruising.
Who this fits: West Coast travelers, empty nesters who want a domestic small-ship experience, anyone who has wanted to see the Skagit Valley in bloom, and couples who want tulip season without flying to Europe.

A Note on Timing
All three itineraries are seasonal, and the bloom window matters more than the exact date.
European Season
Holland's tulip season typically peaks between mid-April and early May, though it shifts year to year depending on the winter. Viking and Windstar both build their spring schedules around that window. Any departure in that range is a reasonable bet.
Pacific Northwest Season
The Skagit Valley festival runs through April. March and April departures on the American Cruise Lines itinerary land in the right window without requiring any specific date optimization.
The Right Framing
What I watch is whether a client has flexibility within the window. A sailing that misses peak bloom by ten days is still a beautiful trip. A client who built an entire itinerary around one perfect day in the field may find that pressure takes something away from the experience. The better approach: book the trip you would want regardless of the flowers, and the flowers are what the season adds.
How to Choose
The decision comes down to three questions.
First, where do you want to be: the Netherlands and Belgium, or the Pacific Northwest? Second, what kind of ship appeals to you: a river longship designed for canal navigation, a small ocean yacht, or an American small ship built for coastal cruising? Third, what does the rest of the itinerary offer beyond the tulips?
Matching the Right Option
Viking is the natural starting point for anyone who has had the European experience on their list for years. Windstar is worth the comparison for travelers who have cruised rivers before and want a more intimate format. American Cruise Lines is one of the most underused options in the market for anyone who wants spring in bloom from the water without a transatlantic flight.
Spring 2027 sailings for all three are in their booking window now. The best stateroom categories fill before the itinerary-level decisions get made.
